Chaos on Kaduna–Abuja rail line as train derails, several cabins overturn (Videos)

A passenger train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed on Tuesday, with several of its cabins overturning. The incident, which occurred in the morning, triggered panic among passengers on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail routes.

A passenger described the scene as “chaotic, with people scrambling in panic to safety.”

It is not yet clear what caused the derailment, and there has been no official statement on whether there were any casualties.

This is not the first disruption on the Kaduna-Abuja rail line. The route has faced multiple incidents in recent years, including a deadly attack by armed men in March 2022.

Just last week, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed a separate incident on the Abuja-Kaduna train service after one of the train’s coach wheels developed a “hot axle.”

According to a statement from NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the issue was caused by “abnormal temperature and excessive heat on the journal housing.” Unyimadu noted that the problem was quickly brought under control and the train was safely taken to Rigasa Station in Kaduna.

Following that incident, the NRC announced temporary capacity issues, particularly for business class passengers, before resuming operations and apologising for the inconvenience.
