CISLAC condemns attack on Kano PCACC Chairman, urges IG to act independently

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has strongly condemned the recent arrest and subsequent release of Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), by officers from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit.

In a statement issued by its Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, CISLAC called the incident a clear example of “corruption fighting back,” warning that such actions undermine Nigeria’s broader anti-corruption efforts and erode public trust in state institutions.

Rafsanjani criticized the circumstances surrounding Rimingado’s detention, suggesting it was related to his ongoing investigations into a high-profile case involving properties allegedly tied to a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC). Rimingado was reportedly detained on Friday evening in connection with the seizure of assets believed to be proceeds of crime.

These actions were part of an investigation and prosecution carried out by the Kano Anti-Graft Agency in line with its legal mandate and a court order. Although Rimingado was released on bail that same night, he was instructed to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further questioning.

Rafsanjani stressed, “The Inspector General of Police must ensure his office is not manipulated by desperate politicians seeking to undermine anti-corruption efforts or protect powerful individuals from legitimate scrutiny. Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of the police but also erode public trust in the impartiality of our institutions.”

He added that such interference damages Nigeria’s global image, particularly in the eyes of the international community and potential investors, while also compromising the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to transparency and accountability.

CISLAC concluded by asserting that political interference in law enforcement must be resisted to safeguard justice and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework.
