Community guard mistakenly kills self after rescuing kidnapped victims

An operative of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps (name withheld) tragically lost his life due to an accidental discharge shortly after participating in a joint operation that successfully rescued 66 kidnap victims in the state.

The operation, led by the military, took place on Monday at Tidibali Forest in the eastern part of Sokoto.

Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that the operative’s death resulted from an accidental discharge of his firearm.

“The incident occurred after the team had returned to their base from the operation. While handling his gun, it accidentally discharged and shot him. He died shortly thereafter,” Usman explained.

He also highlighted the significant progress made in the ongoing operation funded by the state government to combat banditry.

“Over the course of the operation, 66 kidnap victims have been rescued, and several bandits have been neutralized. The operation continues as we remain committed to eradicating criminal activities, especially those of bandits,” Usman added.

Earlier reports from Daily Trust had stated that the rescued victims were taken to Isa town in the Isa Local Government area.
