Corruption: EFCC goes after top bank executives
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its investigation into allegations of financial misconduct among top executives of commercial banks across Nigeria.
During a press briefing at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, Chairman Ola Olukoyede, represented by the Director of Public Affairs Wilson Uwajaren, revealed that several bank executives are currently under scrutiny, with some facing prosecution and others potentially facing jail time if found guilty.
Olukoyede disclosed that at least five bank executives had previously served jail sentences, underscoring the EFCC’s stance that no financial sector is immune from anti-corruption efforts. He stated, “Bank MDs are not exempt from EFCC investigations or prosecution. We will take action once investigations are completed.”

Over the past year, the EFCC has achieved significant milestones under Olukoyede’s leadership. The commission has recovered N248 billion and prosecuted four former governors: Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Willie Obiano (Anambra), and Darius Ishaku (Taraba), as well as three former ministers, including two from the power and one from the aviation sectors. The EFCC also secured 3,455 convictions for various financial crimes, including naira abuse, in this period.
Additionally, the commission has recorded substantial asset recoveries amounting to over $105 million, along with other foreign currencies from various cases, marking a significant year of achievements in its anti-graft efforts.
