Customs in Kebbi seizes 16,300 litres of PMS, smuggled goods worth over ₦300 million
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Kebbi State recently intercepted a substantial amount of smuggled goods, with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) exceeding ₦300 million. The confiscated items included 16,300 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 180 pieces of donkey skins, used clothing, and 74 cartons of various medications.
Iheaneacho Ojike, the Comptroller of the NCS, Kebbi State Command, showcased the seized goods at the Command’s headquarters in Birnin Kebbi. He attributed the success of the operation to the diligent work of outfield officers and the support from the Command’s intelligence unit. According to Ojike, despite the ongoing fuel scarcity, some individuals exploited the situation by attempting to smuggle petroleum products out of Nigeria, an act that further exacerbates the country’s fuel supply issues.
The Comptroller revealed that five suspects were apprehended in connection with the seized goods and issued a firm warning to smuggling syndicates operating in the region. Ojike emphasized that the NCS is fully committed to stopping illegal activities, with officers stationed across the state and equipped to respond to smuggling threats effectively.
In line with standard protocol, the seized goods are to be handed over to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further investigation and action. This step ensures that smuggled goods, especially those with potential health and safety risks, are properly managed by relevant agencies.
