Dangote: My daughters can take my business empire to greater heights

Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has said he does not consider having a male heir necessary for the survival of his business empire, expressing confidence that his three daughters can successfully lead the conglomerate.

Dangote made the remarks during an interview with ARISE News on Tuesday while discussing his family, business and succession plans.

The billionaire said he could see one of his daughters eventually taking charge of the Dangote Group, adding that he had been closely observing their abilities and involvement in the family business.

“I think, yes, I can see one of them. I’ve been watching all of them, so I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead,” he said.

His daughters, Halima, Fatima and Mariya, currently hold senior positions within the conglomerate and have become increasingly involved in its operations.

Dangote said their participation in the business was driven by their own interests rather than pressure from him.

“They are very, very interested in the business. I’m not forcing them to come and be part of this business. They are very interested, and they enjoy it,” he said.

The industrialist expressed confidence that his daughters could outperform him and take the company to an even higher level.

He said their education and exposure could enable them to bring new ideas and greater creativity to the organisation.

“Most likely, they might be even taking the company to the next level,” Dangote said.

When asked whether he believed all three of his daughters had the capacity to achieve this, he simply replied, “All of them.”

On the traditional expectation in parts of northern Nigeria that a family business should be inherited by a son, Dangote said having a male heir was not a priority for him.

He noted that having a son did not automatically guarantee the preservation of a family’s name or legacy.

“Sometimes you can pray for God to give you a son, but that son might be the one to bring down the name of the family,” he said.

Dangote advised against forcing circumstances when things do not happen as expected, adding that he was satisfied with the children he had.

“Sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push. I don’t think a son would have done something better than these three daughters that I have,” he said.

The businessman stressed that his succession plan extends beyond simply handing the company to a family member.

According to him, his priority is to establish strong corporate governance and ensure that the Dangote Group continues to operate professionally regardless of who eventually leads it.

“I want this company to be run professionally. I want to have the highest level of governance,” he said.

Dangote cited companies such as Microsoft and Apple as examples of businesses that have continued to grow and remain successful beyond their founders.

He said his goal was to establish a system that would prevent any family member from undermining the company in the future.

“We want to make sure that we make it very difficult for any family member to come and destroy anything,” he said.

Beyond his business succession plans, Dangote said his ultimate legacy was to contribute to the industrialisation of Africa.

“What I want to leave as a legacy is to industrialise Africa,” he said.

He added that achieving the goal would require the participation of other African entrepreneurs and industrialists.

“I cannot do it alone, but I’m 100 per cent sure that in the next two or three years, other Africans will join,” Dangote said.
