Dangote Refinery retains position as Europe’s biggest jet fuel supplier

Story by Mercy Adaje

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has remained Europe’s largest supplier of jet fuel for the second consecutive month, overtaking the United States and strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global aviation fuel market. The development underscores the refinery’s growing influence in international energy trade.

According to the refinery, the latest European import data compiled by global commodities intelligence firm Kpler showed that more than 400,000 tonnes of jet fuel produced at the Lekki-based facility were shipped to Europe in July, accounting for about 20 per cent of the continent’s total jet fuel imports for the month.

The July performance follows a record 466,000 tonnes exported to Europe in June, when the refinery first displaced the United States as the region’s leading supplier of imported aviation fuel.

The refinery said Europe imported about 2.06 million tonnes of jet fuel in July, with Dangote supplying the largest share ahead of traditional exporters from the United States and the Middle East.

It attributed the sustained export growth to increased production, noting that jet fuel loadings at its Lekki export terminal reached a record 550,000 tonnes in June, while crude deliveries rose to an all-time high of 660,000 barrels per day, providing sufficient feedstock to support rising exports.

The refinery added that geopolitical tensions and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz encouraged European buyers to diversify their supply sources, creating opportunities for Nigeria to expand its presence in the international refined petroleum market.

Industry observers say the refinery’s consistent supply of aviation fuel that meets international quality standards has positioned it as a reliable alternative supplier, further enhancing Nigeria’s profile as a major exporter of refined petroleum products.
