Death threats for NUJ Presidential candidate

The campaign team of Garba Muhammad, a leading presidential candidate for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has raised an alarm over threats to his life.

The Chairman of his Campaign Council, Daharatu Ahmed Aliyu, disclosed the disturbing development in a statement issued on Friday, November 22, 2024. Aliyu included a screenshot of a threatening message received by Garba Muhammad on Wednesday evening, November 20, 2024, which read: “You are on a high-kill contract, so you have to be very careful.”

“The above ‘threat to life’ message was sent to our presidential candidate, Garba Muhammad, from an unknown number on Wednesday evening, November 20, 2024. Shortly after sending the message, the unregistered number became inactive,” Aliyu revealed.

Aliyu emphasised that elections should not be treated as a war and condemned the acts of intimidation targeting their camp. He added that some key supporters of Muhammad, who is the News Express Regional Editor (North), have also received threatening phone calls.

“Unfortunately, this is how far some people are willing to go in this election. We believe the process should be a family affair, not a battlefield,” the statement read.

Aliyu further noted, “On the same day, a member of the campaign council was also called and threatened by two individuals, just around the same time our candidate received the threatening message. Mud-slinging, blackmail, and name-calling seem to have failed, so they have now resorted to direct threats using unregistered numbers.”

He decried the trend, describing it as unacceptable and dangerous to the practice of journalism.

The matter has been reported to the relevant security authorities for immediate investigation. Aliyu expressed confidence in divine protection and victory, stating: “Power belongs to God, and we trust in Him for protection and success in all our endeavours, in shaa Allah.”

He urged supporters to remain steadfast and assured them that no form of intimidation would derail their campaign’s goals.

“We appreciate and appeal to all our supporters to stay resolute and focused. No amount of intimidation or harassment can deter us from achieving success and divine victory,” Aliyu concluded.
