Defence Minister vows protection for soldiers performing lawful duties
The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding all military personnel carrying out lawful duties.
Speaking at a ministerial press conference in Abuja on Wednesday ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, Badaru emphasized that the ministry and the Armed Forces leadership will ensure full protection for officers acting within the law.
His assurance follows Tuesday’s reported altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a Navy Lieutenant over a disputed plot of land in Abuja, allegedly owned by former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (retd.).

“At the Ministry, and indeed the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty,” Badaru stated. “We are looking into this issue, and we assure that any officer performing his duty legally will be fully protected. We will not allow anything to happen to him so long as he is doing his job diligently.”
