Democrats score major wins in first elections of Trump’s second term, signaling party comeback
Democrats swept three key races on Tuesday in the first major elections since Donald Trump returned to the presidency, injecting new energy into the party and elevating a fresh generation of leaders ahead of next year’s congressional contests.
In New York City, 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race, completing a stunning rise from a little-known state lawmaker to one of the most prominent figures in national Democratic politics.
Meanwhile, in Virginia and New Jersey, moderate Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, aged 46 and 53 respectively, secured decisive victories in their gubernatorial races.

Addressing jubilant supporters, Mamdani took direct aim at President Trump:
“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,” he declared.
“So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”
The results offered a crucial test of public sentiment toward Trump’s turbulent nine months in office and signaled that Democrats may be regaining their footing after years of political setbacks.
The contests also highlighted contrasting strategies within the party — from Mamdani’s progressive, movement-driven campaign to the centrist approaches of Spanberger and Sherrill. Despite ideological differences, all three candidates focused heavily on economic issues and affordability, resonating with voters across demographic lines.
