DHQ confirms Coup plot against Tinubu, says suspects to face military trial
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that a plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was uncovered within the ranks of the Nigerian Armed Forces, putting to rest weeks of speculation over the alleged conspiracy.
In a statement, the DHQ said the development followed an extensive internal investigation triggered by the arrest of several officers over acts of indiscipline. During the course of the probe, intelligence and documentary evidence allegedly revealed that some of the suspects were involved in discussions and actions aimed at subverting Nigeria’s constitutional order.
According to the military high command, the investigation has now been concluded and the findings forwarded to the appropriate authorities within the armed forces. Officers found to be culpable are expected to face court-martial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other existing military regulations.

The DHQ stressed that the alleged plot did not advance beyond the planning stage and posed no immediate threat to national stability, noting that swift action by military intelligence prevented any escalation.
Reassuring Nigerians, the military leadership said the armed forces remain firmly loyal to the president as commander-in-chief and committed to the defence of democracy and the constitution.
“The Nigerian Armed Forces will not tolerate acts of insubordination, disloyalty or any attempt to undermine the democratic system,” the statement said, adding that discipline and professionalism remain the core values guiding the military.
The confirmation comes amid heightened political tensions and public concern over security and governance. Analysts say the DHQ’s disclosure signals a move toward transparency and accountability within the military, while also serving as a warning against any attempt to destabilise the country through unconstitutional means.

The DHQ called on the public to remain calm, assuring citizens that national security institutions are firmly in control of the situation and fully committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
