DHQ: U.S. military support in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism fight ‘not abnormal’
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said that support from the United States Armed Forces in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations is not unusual, describing it as part of longstanding international military cooperation.
Reacting to concerns over foreign involvement, the military high command clarified that collaboration with the United States and other partner nations focuses on intelligence sharing, training, logistics, and capacity building — not direct combat leadership.
According to DHQ, Nigeria continues to maintain full sovereignty over its security operations, with the Nigerian Armed Forces retaining operational command and strategic decision-making authority.

The military noted that global counter-terrorism efforts often involve cooperation between allied countries, especially in tackling transnational threats posed by insurgent groups operating across borders.
Nigeria has faced persistent security challenges from extremist factions in the North-East and other regions, prompting collaboration with international partners to enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and counter-insurgency capabilities.
The DHQ reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security while leveraging lawful partnerships aimed at strengthening the country’s fight against terrorism.
