Doctor indicted for rape, faces civil lawsuit from 180 victims

Former doctor, Dr. Derrick Todd, has been indicted by a Massachusetts grand jury on charges of sexually assaulting over 200 patients over a period exceeding ten years. The charges stem from allegations that Todd conducted unnecessary medical procedures, such as pelvic floor therapy, breast and testicular examinations, on his victims between 2010 and 2023.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment on Thursday, citing two counts of rape related to two female victims. During his arraignment on Friday, Dr. Todd pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on $10,000 bail. As part of his release, he has been ordered to have no contact with his alleged victims, surrender his passport and medical licenses, and refrain from practising medicine.

The alleged assaults took place in December 2022 and June 2023. Investigations into further accusations are ongoing, with over 180 victims currently being represented in a civil lawsuit against Dr. Todd. William Thompson, a lawyer with the firm Lubin & Meyer, stated that this is just the beginning of the criminal case, and it validates the ongoing civil case pursued by the firm.

“This is a case of a doctor abusing his position and exploiting the trust of his patients for his own sexual gratification,” said Thompson.

Dr. Todd, who was a rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, was dismissed from his position in July 2023 after an internal investigation prompted by anonymous complaints. Following the dismissal, he entered a voluntary agreement with the Board of Registration in Medicine, prohibiting him from practising medicine across the United States.

The hospital and other defendants in the lawsuit have been accused of failing to take action despite knowing about Dr. Todd’s misconduct. The victims range in age from teenagers to women in their 60s.
