DSS finds arms cache in ousted Speaker’s CSO office

Operatives from the Department of State Security (DSS) have reportedly uncovered a large cache of arms and ammunition in an office at the Lagos State House of Assembly, allegedly linked to Baruwa Idris Okeowo, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the ousted former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Baruwa, a retired military officer, is said to have used the office as part of his responsibilities for the controversial Obasa, who was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, following a majority vote by lawmakers due to allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

Obasa was replaced by Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, although Obasa maintains that his removal was unlawful and that he remains the legitimate Speaker.

The crisis surrounding the leadership of the Assembly escalated on Monday, when increased security measures were put in place around the complex. Security vans and personnel were deployed as Obasa attempted to return, causing delays in the plenary session. It was later revealed that the Assembly leadership had sought DSS assistance due to security concerns related to Obasa’s return.

After the session, DSS agents discovered 47 pump-action rifles and live ammunition, neatly stored in the office space previously used by Baruwa before Obasa’s impeachment. The firearms were seized by the DSS, and an inventory was taken for further investigation.

A source close to the DSS confirmed the discovery, while a separate source linked to Obasa dismissed the find as “a joke taken too far,” questioning how the weapons had gone unnoticed despite numerous meetings held in the same office. The source suggested that the incident could be an attempt at blackmail, alleging it was part of ongoing efforts to tarnish Obasa’s reputation.

As of now, Obasa has not been summoned by any security agency in connection with the discovery, and the situation remains tense as the leadership struggle in the Lagos State House of Assembly continues.
