DSS, Prison officials lock horns at court over suspended CBN Governor’s custody

Officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) clashed on Tuesday, as they disputed the custody of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

According to News Point Nigeria, the clash occurred after Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million.

The judge also ordered that Emefiele be remanded at the correctional centre until the bail conditions were fulfilled.

Following the ruling, DSS operatives positioned their Hilux Pick Up van, which they had used to bring Emefiele to court, in a manner that suggested they intended to take him back to their detention centre.

In response to this action, Emefiele’s lead counsel, Joseph Daudu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), along with other lawyers, raised an alarm about the secret police’s potential re-arrest of their client.

After the court ruling, the suspended CBN governor sought refuge inside the courtroom with his legal representatives.

However, as the prison officials moved to take Emefiele into custody until the bail conditions were met, the secret police challenged them, resulting in a heated altercation.
