Eagles defeat Chiefs 40-22 to win Super Bowl
The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in the Super Bowl on Sunday, denying the Chiefs a historic third consecutive NFL title.
The victory, which was watched by President Donald Trump, marked a remarkable comeback for the Eagles, who had lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl two years ago.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had an outstanding performance, throwing two touchdown passes and running for another. Reflecting on his journey, Hurts said, “I’ve been able to use every experience and learn from it — the good, the bad, all of it — to pursue my own greatness.” He also acknowledged the team’s success, crediting his teammates and the new additions for overcoming past challenges.
The Chiefs had hoped to make history by winning a third consecutive Super Bowl title after their triumphs in 2023 and 2024. However, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes struggled throughout the game, getting sacked six times and throwing two interceptions. “Credit to the Eagles, they played better than us from start to finish,” Mahomes admitted. “Obviously, the turnovers hurt, and I take all the blame for that. I just didn’t play to my standard and have to be better next time.”
The Eagles took complete control of the game, leading 24-0 at halftime after three unanswered touchdowns from Hurts, Cooper DeJean, and A.J. Brown. They extended their lead to 34-0 late in the third quarter before the Chiefs managed to score three consolation touchdowns. Eagles kicker Jake Elliott also contributed with four field goals.
The game, attended by a star-studded crowd of 65,719 at New Orleans’ Superdome, was watched by President Trump, who made history as the first sitting U.S. President to attend the Super Bowl. Trump arrived earlier that day aboard Air Force One after playing a round of golf with Tiger Woods in Florida. While Trump’s relationship with the NFL has been contentious, particularly following his criticism of players protesting during the national anthem in 2017, he received a warm reception in the Superdome, where he met with first responders and victims’ families from a recent New Orleans attack.
Trump was met with cheers when the Superdome’s screen showed him saluting during the national anthem, a stark contrast to the boos that followed when Taylor Swift was shown in the VIP section. Swift, who was at the game to watch her boyfriend, Chiefs player Travis Kelce, was booed by parts of the crowd due to her political support for Kamala Harris. Trump later shared a post on his TruthSocial network, commenting, “Trump gets massive cheers at the Super Bowl while Taylor Swift gets booed – the world is healing!”
Other stars at the event included Paul McCartney, Kevin Costner, Paul Rudd, Anne Hathaway, and soccer star Lionel Messi. The pre-game entertainment also included a surprise performance by Lady Gaga on Bourbon Street, which honored victims of recent U.S. tragedies.
In a statement, Trump expressed his hope that the Super Bowl could foster national unity. “Football is America’s most popular sport — for good reason — it fosters a sense of national unity, bringing families, friends, and fans together and strengthening communities,” he said. “This annual tradition transcends our differences and personifies our shared patriotic values of family, faith, and freedom.”
Trump left the stadium early in the third quarter, just before the halftime show featuring Kendrick Lamar and a surprise appearance by SZA. The show was briefly interrupted when a protester ran onto the field waving a Palestinian flag with “Gaza” and “Sudan” written on it, but security quickly dealt with the disruption.
