ECOWAS supports 1,000 flood victims in Bauchi
In a significant effort to aid those impacted by the 2024 flood disaster in Bauchi State, approximately 1,000 vulnerable individuals have received vital support through a multipurpose intervention funded by the ECOWAS Commission.
This was disclosed by the State Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, at the Grand Finale Ceremony of the Ecowas Emergency Response Project held at the Bauchi Government House on Wednesday.
Represented by the Director of Humanitarian Affairs of the Ministry, Valentine Ezebu, the minister explained that the initiative aims to support the most flood-affected communities in the state.

He noted the Federal Government’s dedication through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, to alleviating human suffering and fostering recovery for disaster-impacted individuals.
According to him, “The collaboration between ECOWAS Commission and Federal Government of Nigeria underscores the power of regional solidarity in addressing humanitarian challenges and demonstrates
that collective action is the key to overcoming shared challenges.
“The list of the vulnerable population in the six local government areas of Bauchi who benefited from the intervention was provided by the Bauchi State Government and was validated by Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Ministry’s implementing partner, to ensure that the most affected population within these locations are targeted
and captured.”
On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tugga, who was represented by the Head of the Ecowas National Unit of the ministry, Ali Gombe Haruna, highlighted that “The exercise was carried out in conjunction with Nigeria Red Cross Society.
“The Kirfi Local government is the last among communities in Bauchi State affected by the flood to benefit from the humanitarian support.”
He expressed the ministry’s satisfaction with the contribution of the Bauchi State Government to the program.
Tugga believes that Nigeria, as a member country of Ecowas and other multilateral associations, enjoys lots of humanitarian support.
Also speaking the Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs of the Ecowas Commission, Sintiki Tarfa who represented the President of the Ecowas Commission Aliyu Umar Ture said the intervention is a demonstration of support to flood victims in Bauchi State.
Speaking at the event, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by the Secretary to the State Government Aminu Hammayo noted that the state government had also provided additional support to one hundred and fifty households to address the growing needs of flood victims.
Each beneficiary received a bag of rice, beans, a gallon of vegetable oil, a blanket, a bucket, a mat, and a cash transfer of seventy-five thousand naira.
