EFCC backs down on petition against Archbishop Ibezim, awaits court decision

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has suspended all actions on a petition filed against the Archbishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Ibezim, until a court rules on the matter.
The petition, dated July 28, was filed by Chief G. Tagbo (SAN) on behalf of Mr. Echezona Onuigbo, who accused Archbishop Ibezim of illegally selling church land. According to the petitioner, only the Anglican Church’s Board of Trustees has the authority to carry out such transactions.

Okoli explained that the EFCC’s invitation letter to Archbishop Ibezim, issued on October 7, came before the agency learned that the case was already in court.
“We are law-abiding and will stay all actions pending the determination of the case,” Okoli told the court.
Counsel to the Archbishop, Mr. Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN), confirmed that both sides had agreed that the EFCC would not invite, arrest, or take any further action against his client until the case is resolved.

At the court hearing, EFCC counsel Mr. C. A. Okoli said the Commission would respect the court process and maintain the status quo until the case is decided.
Justice Peace Otti ordered that a hearing notice be served to the second respondent, Mr. Echezona Onuigbo, who was absent in court, and adjourned the matter to November 27 for hearing.
