El-Rufai claims Tinubu, not NASS, rejected him
Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has denied claims that the National Assembly rejected him as a ministerial nominee.
In August 2023, the Senate had withheld El-Rufai’s confirmation, citing security reports from the State Security Service. However, in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, El-Rufai clarified that it was not a rejection by the National Assembly, but rather a decision by President Bola Tinubu to withdraw his nomination.
El-Rufai explained, “After eight years as governor of Kaduna State, I had my own plans. The President asked me to put those plans on hold, and after some time, we agreed that he would nominate me as a minister. There were certain conditions attached to that agreement. Along the way, either the President changed his mind or something else happened.”
He further added, “Don’t believe the narrative that I was rejected by the National Assembly. The President simply didn’t want me in his cabinet, and he changed his mind. Honestly, I don’t care about it.”
