El-Rufai tells Nigerians to transact in both old, new notes (Video)

Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, has urged citizens to continue their transactions with both the new and old naira notes in defiance of the federal government and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira swap deadline and implementation policy.

He also assured that the policy will be reversed once the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, becomes president.

Governor El-Rufai said this while speaking with a political audience in his state and urged everyone to stop thronging to banks to swap their old notes or obtain new ones.

Speaking in Hausa language, the governor said, “Everyone, especially people in Kaduna should not be disturbed because of the naira swap deadline, continue running your businesses and daily activities with whatever notes (old or new) you have.

“And we will make sure to address this problem as soon as we win the election. That will be the first issue to tackle if we win the election.

“Don’t rush yourself into taking old naira notes to the bank and wasting your time in the unnecessary queues at the bank. Nobody can stop you (people) from using the notes.

“When we come to power, (Insha Allah), if Bola Tinubu becomes the president, we’ll give people more time to get rid of the old naira notes,” El-Rufai assured.

Recalled that the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro restrained the February 10th deadline for the implementation of the CBN naira redesign policy after the governments of Zamfara, Kogi, and Kaduna appealed to the Court in a motion ex-parte to halt the implementation or allow the new and old notes to co-exist.

After President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled the redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes on November 23, 2022, the apex bank fixed the validity period of the old notes to a January 31 deadline which was later extended to February 10th after much outcry from Nigerians about difficulties to obtain the new notes that remain acutely scarce.
