Emefiele returns to court over alleged economic sabotage

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, is due to stand trial by the Federal Government on alleged economic sabotage-related offences.

Emefiele’s initial trial was put on hold, but he will now be arraigned at a High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. A notice for his trial before Justice Hamza Muazu has been sighted, with indication that the ex-CBN Governor will be docked along with one Ramalan Yaro.

A court registrar, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that Emefiele is expected to appear before the court for his plea of guilty or not guilty to be taken this morning.

Additionally, one of the lawyers in his defence team, Maxwell Opara, affirmed that the notice of arraignment had been served on the former CBN Governor.

Emefiele will be brought to court by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Matthew Burkaa, who had signed an undertaking to ensure his appearance for trial. This follows Justice Olukayode Adegbola Adeniyi’s bail grant to the former CBN governor last week.

According to the judge, Emefiele must deposit his travel documents before the chief registrar of the court, pending his arraignment.
