English Premier League clubs vote to retain VAR for next season

During the Premier League’s annual general meeting, English Premier League clubs voted in favor of continuing to use the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the upcoming season.

The decision, with a majority vote, solidified VAR’s place in the league for another season.

While the exact figures from the ballot were not disclosed, reports from the BBC indicated that 19 out of the 20 clubs in the division were in support of retaining the controversial technology.

The only club that voted to abolish VAR was Wolves, who had previously expressed their dissatisfaction with the system.

Concern over VAR undermining the Premier League brand surfaced, especially after a season filled with contentious decisions.

Introduced in 2019 to aid referees in reducing clear and obvious errors during matches, VAR faced criticism and backlash from managers and fans alike.

In response to the vote, the Premier League recognised the need for improvements to be made, aiming to enhance decision-making accuracy while benefiting the game and its supporters. Plans for introducing semi-automated offside technology in the upcoming season were also revealed as a step towards reducing the time spent on offside checks.

Additionally, in-stadium announcements will be made to maintain transparency and keep fans informed when an on-field decision is altered following a VAR intervention.

Maintaining a “high threshold” for intervention, the Premier League reassured fans that efforts were being made to address issues while acknowledging the necessity of continuous enhancement in the usage of VAR.
