Expert urges transparent, accountable IGR practices to enhance taxpayer compliance

Dr. Chiwuike Uba, a consultant, has emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for all levels of government. These practices are necessary to encourage taxpayers to fulfill their obligations promptly.

Uba made this call during a consultative meeting with stakeholders in Yola, organized by the USAID State2State activity.

He highlighted that accountability plays a pivotal role in reducing tax apathy. “Government executives must be accountable to boost taxpayer morale and implement policies that promote tax compliance,” he stated.

He further emphasized that people should have insight into monthly revenue collection instead of relying solely on reports from the Bureau of Statistics.

Uba urged tax authorities to establish and operate a transparent tax system that optimizes revenue collection through voluntary compliance.

Additionally, Uba stressed the importance of taxpayers considering their tax obligations as a civil duty that must be fulfilled without delay.

In her address, Ms. Suzanne Myada, State2State’s Public Financial Management specialist, explained that the objective of the meeting was to enhance transparency and accountability in governance.

She advised taxpayers to familiarize themselves with their rights and existing laws to avoid falling into the wrong hands.

Various participants, including representatives from the State Board of Internal Revenue, Civil Society Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Taxpayers Association, and persons living with disabilities, praised USAID for organizing the engagement.

Malam Salihu Sabana, Director of Taxes at the Adamawa Board of Internal Revenue, described the meeting as perfect and eye-opening for the Board.

He expressed the need for system upgrades from manual to digital processes, citing international best practices on taxpayers’ registration.

Ahmed Arabo, Organizing Secretary of the National Association of Private Schools Proprietors, Adamawa Chapter, commended the educational value of the engagement.

He highlighted that the meeting enhanced their understanding of the government’s rights over citizens and citizens’ rights regarding taxes. Arabo acknowledged USAID for providing this opportunity and committed to sharing the knowledge acquired with association members.

Efforts towards transparency and accountability in IGR practices are vital for building trust between governments and taxpayers, leading to increased compliance for the overall benefit of society.
