FG declares public holidays for Christmas, New Year celebrations
The Federal Government has announced December 25 and 26, 2025, as well as January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the government’s goodwill to Christians and all Nigerians as the year draws to a close.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo encouraged citizens to reflect on the virtues of love, peace, sacrifice and humility, which he described as the core lessons of the birth of Jesus Christ. He noted that such values remain vital in fostering national unity, tolerance and harmony.

The Minister further urged Nigerians of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds to use the festive period to pray for peace, security and progress in the country, pledging the government’s continued commitment to development and cohesion.
He advised citizens to remain law-abiding, security-conscious and moderate in their celebrations, while cooperating with security agencies to ensure a peaceful season.
