FG introduces new subject limits for schools

The Federal Government has introduced a new framework for basic, senior secondary, and technical education, with the goal of easing the burden on students and improving learning outcomes.
The updated curricula, which set new limits on the number of subjects students can take, will be implemented starting in the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, the review was a collaborative effort involving the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), UBEC, NSSEC, NBTE, and other key stakeholders.

The new structure aims to find a better balance between academic subjects and practical learning. Under this plan, students will now have the following subject limits:
Primary 1–3: 9–10 subjects
Primary 4–6: 10–12 subjects
Junior Secondary School: 12–14 subjects
Senior Secondary School: 8–9 subjects
Technical School: 9–11 subjects
Professor Ahmad stated that the revised curricula are designed to reduce pressure on students, allow more time for in-depth study, and align education with current needs.

In a statement signed by Folasade Boriowo, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, the ministry praised the contributions of all stakeholders and assured that the implementation will be closely monitored to ensure a smooth transition in schools nationwide.
