FG sacks newly appointed UNIZIK VC, dissolves governing council

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

The Federal Ministry of Education has removed Dr. Bernard Odoh, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), and dissolved the university’s Governing Council.

This decision follows allegations by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that the council ignored due process in selecting Dr. Odoh for the position.

The union demanded the council’s dissolution, accusing it of illegalities during the recruitment process.

In a statement, the Ministry revealed that the Governing Council’s Chairman appointed a Vice-Chancellor who failed to meet the minimum eligibility requirements.

This misstep, the Ministry noted, caused unrest and tension within the university community.

The Federal Ministry of Education stressed the urgency of resolving governance issues at UNIZIK to restore stability to the institution.
