Finidi George resigns as Super Eagles coach
Finidi George has stepped down as the head coach of the Super Eagles, following the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign technical adviser.
Former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye announced George’s departure in a social media post on Saturday.
He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
George, a former Nigerian international and winger, took on the role with high expectations but failed to win his first two matches as head coach. He had previously served as an assistant to former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.
The NFF will now begin the search for a new head coach to lead the Super Eagles. The football world is mourning the loss of a talented young player who left a mark on the sport.

Background of Finidi George
Finidi George was appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles in April 2024.
He is a celebrated figure in Nigerian football, having had a distinguished playing career that included stints at Ajax, Real Betis, and Ipswich Town.
George won three league titles with Ajax, who he joined in 1993, and also lifted the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup with the Dutch giants in 1995.
George also featured for Nigeria at four editions of the Nations Cup and finished as a runner-up in 2000 and as bronze medalist in 1992 and 2002.
He took over at Nigeria’s most successful club Enyimba in 2021, leading them to their first title in four years by winning the league two years later.
George is described as a man for the big moments, and his resignation has come as a shock to the football community.
