Fire engulfs Jet A-1 fuel dump at Nigerian Air Force Base, Abuja

Story from Haruna YUSUF, Abuja

A massive fire has erupted in a Jet A-1 fuel dump at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base, situated along Airport Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Following the incident, the Nigerian Air Force has promptly established an investigation panel to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the fire.

In an official statement, Air Commodore Ayodele Famuyiwa, the Director of Public Relations and Information, announced that the fire was reported at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

Fortunately, the combined efforts of the Fire Services from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Federal Fire Service, and the NAF Fire Service successfully extinguished the fire, which had also caused an explosion.

Although the A-1 fuel dump is located within the NAF Premises, it is important to note that Messer Geometrics Synergy Services Limited owns and operates the fuel facility under a ‘Build, Operate and Transfer’ ownership agreement.

Air Commodore Famuyiwa expressed gratitude that no casualties were reported as a result of the incident.

Additionally, the NAF seized the opportunity to express appreciation to the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, both of which were present at the scene, providing vital assistance as required.
