Former ICPC chairman, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, passes away at 90

Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, a renowned jurist and former chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), passed away at the age of 90.

Born on October 27, 1933, Justice Ayoola’s illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he fulfilled numerous pivotal roles in the legal arena.

He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of London and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Jurisprudence from Oxford University.

Ayoola was called to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1957 and later admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1959, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey in legal service.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ayoola held numerous prestigious positions. He was Chairman of Western Nigeria Housing Corporation (NHC) (1974), a Member of the Commonwealth Africa Conference Chief Justices and Judges, and a Judge of the High Court of Western Nigeria and Oyo State (1976).

Others positions were the Justice of the Court of Appeal of The Gambia (1980-1983) and Chief Justice of The Gambia (1983-1992), Vice President of the World Judges Association (1991), President of the Court of Appeal of Seychelles, and Justice of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria (1992-1998) and Supreme Court of Nigeria (1998-2003).

The rest includes chairman of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (NHRC) (2003-2005), Chairman of the Working Committee on Law Revision of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (2000), President of the Appeals Chamber of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (2004), and Chairman of the ICPC (2005-2010).

Ayoola was also an active member of the National Judicial Council (NJC) until early 2023 and edited several legal publications, including the Seychelles Law Digest, Law Reports of The Gambia, and Nigerian Monthly Law Reports.
