Funeral service of Ex-COAS Lagbaja ends, body set for interment
The funeral service of former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away at 56 on November 5, has concluded at the National Christian Centre in Abuja.
The ceremony, marked by solemn tributes, saw his remains arrive at 11:17 am in a grand military procession, accompanied by a ‘pipe band’ and horsemen.
Among the dignitaries present were Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other top government officials.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, along with service chiefs, officers, and members of the Armed Forces, attended to pay their last respects.
During her remarks, the First Lady praised Lagbaja’s legacy, stating, “He fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith. May he receive his crown of righteousness. Our prayers and thoughts go to his wife, Mrs Maria Lagbaja, their children, and the entire family.”

Lt.-Col. TE Ogbonyomi, Director of Chaplaincy Services (Army), delivered a sermon titled “The Life of Victory.” He reflected on the late general’s service, highlighting his efforts to transform the Nigerian army into a motivated force and the numerous initiatives he led to strengthen national defence.
Following prayers for the repose of Lagbaja’s soul, his body is scheduled for final interment at 2:00 pm at the National Military Cemetery, where President Bola Tinubu and other key government officials are expected to perform the laying of wreaths.
