Gashua–Masaba Road project gains momentum, promises better access for Yobe farmers

A vital 25-kilometre road linking 14 farming communities in Yobe State is progressing ahead of plan and is expected to transform agricultural trade in the region, officials confirmed Monday during an inspection tour.
The Gashua-Masaba road, hailed as an “economic lifeline,” aims to end the isolation of rural farmers and provide a reliable route to major markets, directly tackling high transport costs and post-harvest losses.
Local, national and international journalists visited the construction site to monitor progress, accompanied by the Yobe State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture and the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Buba Abba Kyari.

The Project Engineer Kabir Mohamed Kadubu reported the significant advancement of the construction.
He noted that for years, local farmers faced severe difficulties moving their goods.
“These communities produce large quantities of rice and vegetables, but without a proper road, their harvests often get spoiled before reaching the market,” Kadubu stated.

The engineer said the road is turning previously overgrown, impassable land into a paved trade corridor.
He attributed the steady pace of construction to strong government support and improved security across the region, a crucial enabler for development in Nigeria’s Northeast.
“Once completed, the road is projected to dramatically lower transportation expenses, increase farmers’ incomes, reduce crop wastage, and strengthen local food security, providing a major boost to Yobe’s agricultural economy,” said Kabir.
