Germany closes embassy in South Sudan amid escalating violence

Germany has shut down its embassy in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, due to escalating tensions that threaten to plunge the country back into civil war, the German foreign ministry announced on Saturday.
The decision follows President Salva Kiir’s recent dismissal of the Upper Nile State governor, a move that comes amid intensifying clashes between government forces and an ethnic militia accused of siding with his rival, First Vice President Riek Machar.
The deteriorating security situation has sparked fears that South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, could return to conflict just seven years after emerging from a brutal civil war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
“After years of fragile peace, South Sudan is once again on the brink of civil war,” the German foreign ministry stated on X.
“President Kiir and Vice President Machar are plunging the country into a spiral of violence. It’s their responsibility to end this senseless violence & finally implement the peace agreement.”

Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations’ peacekeeping chief in South Sudan, also voiced concerns, warning that the country is “on the brink of relapse into civil war.”
