Gov. Alia reinstates Attorney General after controversial lawsuit against EFCC

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has lifted the suspension of Fidelis Mnyim, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

The reinstatement was made public during a State Executive Council meeting in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.

Mnyim had been suspended on October 23, 2024, after initiating a legal challenge questioning the constitutionality of the laws that established the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The lawsuit, which drew significant attention from political analysts, triggered widespread public criticism.

Addressing the press after the council meeting, Tersoo Kula, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alia, stated that Mnyim was reinstated after withdrawing the state from the controversial legal action.

“The Attorney General met all the conditions for his reinstatement by promptly retracting the state’s involvement in the matter,” Kula said.

Mnyim’s return to office ends weeks of uncertainty and speculation about the administration’s management of the situation.
