Gov. Bago calls for emphasis on vocational training in universities

Niger State Governor, Rt Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing vocational training in the education sector.

In a press release by Bologi Ibrahim, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, it was revealed that Governor Umaru Bago expressed his views during a courtesy visit by the management and staff of New Gate University at the Government House in Minna.

Governor Umaru Bago explained his stance, stating, “Nature has a way of putting everybody into his position, so let us encourage vocational training even at the level of university. Short-term courses on how to fix phones, repair computers, service barbing machines, and fix microphones can be introduced, and it will change our thinking and psyche because we need more people in this category than those with degrees.”

He further elaborated, “We are considering a bond arrangement where 50% scholarship will be given to medical students, and they will sign a pact to work for the state government for some years before going to other places.”

Expressing concern over the shortage of medical practitioners in the state, Governor Umaru Bago emphasized the need to incentivize and encourage individuals interested in medical-related courses.

Governor Umaru Bago also stressed the importance of technology and e-learning, stating, “Time has come for stakeholders in education to think out of the box by taking advantage of technology to encourage e-learning.”

He encouraged the management of New Gate University to explore public-private partnerships for infrastructural development, renewable energy as an alternative power source, and investments that would bring growth and development to the institution.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor of New Gate University, Prof. Yusuf Sadiq, highlighted the institution’s commitment to education and positive change, stating, “Young people are agents of positive change and the future of society.”

He highlighted the university’s partnership with a foundation, offering a 50% tuition scholarship to qualified candidates from the state’s 25 local government areas. Prof. Sadiq expressed confidence that the university would produce graduates who would significantly benefit the state.

The Vice-Chancellor also appealed to the Governor for support, saying, “We call on the Governor to honour government support in the area of security, adequate power supply, and a conducive learning environment for the students.”

During the courtesy visit, the delegation from New Gate University was led by the Pro-Chancellor, Nuhu Hassan.
