How Kano lecturer survived brutal attack by student’s boyfriend
An alarming attack on a lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic has sent shockwaves through the academic community, raising urgent concerns over campus safety and the growing issue of student misconduct.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, involved Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi, the exam officer of the department, who was violently attacked by a female student’s boyfriend.
Reports revealed that the attack stemmed from the student’s dissatisfaction with her assigned course. Despite her repeated attempts to have her admission transferred to a different department, her academic performance did not meet the required standards for the move.
According to eyewitnesses, the student’s boyfriend, infuriated by the lecturer’s refusal to process the transfer, stormed Abdullahi’s office wielding a cutlass. In a targeted attack, he aimed for Abdullahi’s head. However, the lecturer courageously defended himself, sustaining severe injuries to his hands in the process.

The chaotic scene drew the attention of other students, who intervened and managed to subdue the assailant, forcing him to flee. Abdullahi was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he received urgent medical treatment for his injuries.
The aftermath of the attack took an even more troubling turn when security officers attempted to apprehend the student and her boyfriend at their residence in Dorayi. Their efforts were met with stiff resistance as a group of thugs attacked the officers, creating an opportunity for the suspects to escape.
Auwal Ismail Bagwai, the Public Relations Officer of Kano State Polytechnic, confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations are underway. He emphasised that the institution is cooperating fully with security agencies to ensure justice is served and the perpetrators are brought to book.
This violent episode has prompted widespread outrage across Kano State, with academics and the public alike calling for stricter measures to prevent such incidents on campuses. Many have urged the authorities to implement robust security protocols and to address issues of indiscipline among students.
