ICC issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Hamas leader over Gaza war crimes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense chief, and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri, over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The decision, reported by Leadership Newspaper on Thursday, follows months of legal proceedings and an announcement by ICC prosecutor Karim Khan on May 20.

Khan had called for the arrest warrants in connection with the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military actions in Gaza.

The ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri comes despite Israel’s ongoing rejection of the court’s jurisdiction. Israeli authorities continue to deny accusations of war crimes in Gaza, but the ICC has asserted that Israel’s consent is not required to proceed with legal action.

The warrants are particularly significant amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, fueled by the ongoing conflict between Israel, Hamas, and Iran. Israel recently claimed to have killed Al-Masri—also known as Mohammed Deif—in an airstrike, although Hamas has not confirmed or denied his death.

This development represents a pivotal moment in the ICC’s efforts to hold individuals accountable for their roles in the conflict, further heightening the geopolitical tensions in the region.
