India-based Nigerian arrested for $13,361 fraud
The Cyber Cell of Delhi Police, India, has arrested a Nigerian national named Patrick Ngomere for allegedly hacking into the email account of Family Care Pvt. Limited, a pharmaceutical company, and fraudulently siphoning off Rs 11.73 lakh.
Ngomere, who is also accused of residing in India without a valid visa, is believed to be part of a larger cyber fraud syndicate operating across the country.
According to a report sourced from India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the suspect has confessed to the crime. The Rs 11.73 lakh (approximately $13,361, based on XE.com currency conversion) was stolen from the company’s account.
Ngomere, a resident of Greater Noida, was apprehended near an ATM after authorities traced his mobile phone to a bank account linked to the fraudulent transaction.
The scam reportedly began on December 10, when Family Care Pvt. Limited received an email impersonating their vendor, Accent Pharma, requesting payment to a new bank account. Unaware of the fraud, the company transferred Rs 11.76 lakh. The fraud was discovered only after the payment and subsequent verification.
The cyber crime unit launched a thorough investigation, tracing the hacked email to Nigeria and tracking the money to a bank account in Manipur. Surveillance footage led to Ngomere’s arrest.
Further investigation revealed that Ngomere was living in India without a valid visa and may be part of a larger criminal syndicate. A case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Foreigners Act, with ongoing investigations.
In another report from January 2025, PUNCH Metro highlighted the arrest of two Nigerian nationals by the Kuwait General Department of Criminal Investigation in Ahmadi Governorate. The suspects were apprehended within 24 hours of robbing a foreign exchange office in Mahboula, southern Kuwait City, and stealing 4,600 Kuwaiti Dinars (approximately $14,918.69).
