IOM repatriates 180 Nigerians stranded in Libya
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has successfully repatriated 180 Nigerians who were stranded in Libya.
This marks another effort by the IOM to assist Nigerians facing hardship abroad and return them home safely.
According to NEMA, the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday, October 4, 2024. They were brought back aboard a charter flight operated by Al-Buraq Airlines.

The group consisted of 67 adult females, 55 adult males, 24 female children, 18 male children, and 16 infants.
Upon their arrival, the Nigerian Immigration Service carried out a biometric profiling of the returnees to ensure proper documentation.
This was part of the efforts to track their reintegration process and provide them with the necessary support as they transition back into society.
Several government agencies, in conjunction with NEMA, offered immediate humanitarian assistance to the returnees, including food, medical aid, and counseling.
This aid is aimed at easing their reintegration into local communities and helping them regain stability after their ordeal in Libya.
NEMA emphasized that the IOM has continued to play a vital role in assisting Nigerians stranded in various countries, and this latest evacuation highlights the organization’s dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of migrants.
This effort is part of an ongoing repatriation program led by the IOM, aimed at providing protection and support to migrants facing challenges abroad.
This is not the first such repatriation, as the IOM and NEMA have worked on multiple evacuations of stranded Nigerians in recent years.
These initiatives are also a response to the often harsh conditions faced by Nigerian migrants in Libya, who are frequently subjected to exploitation and inhumane treatment.
The Nigerian government, in partnership with international organisations, continues to advocate for the safe and dignified return of all its citizens trapped in foreign countries under adverse conditions.
This latest group of returnees is expected to receive continued support to help them rebuild their lives back home.
