IPOB reacts as Soludo shuts Onitsha markets over sit-at-home order

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised the Anambra State Government following the closure of major markets in Onitsha over the enforcement of a sit-at-home order.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo had ordered the shutdown of markets after traders reportedly stayed away from business activities in compliance with the sit-at-home directive, citing security concerns and the need to protect lives and property.

Reacting, IPOB accused the state government of unfairly punishing traders and residents, insisting that it had earlier suspended its sit-at-home order. The group argued that the market closures would worsen economic hardship for traders and small business owners already struggling to survive.

However, the Anambra State Government maintained that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety, noting that intelligence reports indicated potential threats if markets were opened under tense conditions.

The development has sparked mixed reactions among traders, with some expressing frustration over lost income, while others supported the move as a precautionary measure to prevent violence.

Authorities said security agencies remain on alert as the government continues to assess the situation and engage stakeholders to restore normal economic activities.
