JAMB conducts first-ever CBT promotion examination for 6,000 federal directors

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday administered a landmark computer-based promotion examination for 6,000 directorate-level staff of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).
In the Federal Capital Territory, the exercise took place at JAMB’s CBT Centre in Kogo, Bwari Area Council.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, speaking during the exercise, explained that the promotion test was also being simultaneously conducted for candidates in the United Kingdom, United States, India, and Egypt.
He described the initiative as a bold and forward-looking step by the FCSC. “This is a very bold initiative on the part of the Federal Civil Service Commission, and I’m not surprised because of its visionary leadership,” he said.

Prof. Oloyede noted that many candidates initially appeared anxious, but their confidence improved once the process began. “Once you know how to use your cellphone, you can write our examination. It’s very simple and user-friendly. This examination is taking place not only in Nigeria but also in four countries across the world,” he added.
He expressed optimism that the new system would help reduce fear and resistance to computer-based testing among public servants.
Dr. Hussaini Adamu, the Commissioner representing the FCT and Niger State on the FCSC, also commended the exercise. He disclosed that the assessment began on Wednesday with about 1,500 candidates writing the test in three batches.
According to him, the transparency and efficiency of the CBT model had won over many initially apprehensive candidates. “They are happier with this process compared to the old pen-and-paper method. It is more transparent, and we have CCTV cameras monitoring the halls remotely to prevent malpractice,” he said.

He praised the conducive examination environment, including functional systems, adequate security, and proper cooling.
FCSC Chairman, Prof. Adetunji Olaopa, described the exercise as historic, noting that it was the first time the commission would use a CBT method for promotion examinations. He expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the test for the 6,000 director-cadre candidates.
“This may look like a small step, but it is a significant milestone for us. While CBTs are already common nationally, this is the first time the Federal Civil Service Commission is adopting it. We had full confidence partnering with JAMB, a respected national institution with decades of experience,” he said.

Prof. Olaopa added that the successful conduct of the test had justified the commission’s decision to embrace technological innovation in its assessment processes.
