Jumping onto a Gravy Train – A rejoinder, by Engr. Bello Gwarzo Abdullahi, FNSE

The insightful article penned by Nick Dazang, titled “Jumping onto a Gravy Train,”which was published in the Vanguard newspaper on 5 May 2025, delves into the prevalent issue of defections that have significantly impacted the political landscape of our nation.

The recurring trend of politicians switching allegiances between opposition parties and the ruling APC has created a culture where personal ambitions often overshadow the genuine dedication to public service.

In Nigeria, defections symbolize the shift from one political party to another driven by the irresistible appeal of political power, access to resources, and the promise of personal gain that influences politicians to change sides. The current political scenario in Nigeria is tainted by a noticeable lack of integrity and moral compass among its leaders.

Despite the varying reasons behind these defections, it is evident that the rush for power could lead to chaos, where the distribution of benefits may spiral into disorder.

The APC, in particular, has become a magnet for defectors seeking a chance at redemption for past wrongdoings and a shot at power in upcoming elections. This trend emphasizes the critical need for a strong and united opposition that can hold the ruling party accountable and address the growing concerns of the populace.

The defectors and their recruiters assume that Nigerians will passively endure the mismanagement and excesses of the APC indefinitely. This assumption, marked by arrogance, often signals a downfall. As Nigeria stands at a crucial juncture, the call for prudence, patriotism, and a committed opposition grows louder.

The looming threat of one-party dominance underscores the urgency for citizens to actively oppose the current political trajectory. It is essential for the political leaders to come together and strategize on unveiling the shortcomings of the incumbent government in meeting the needs of the people.

Only through unified efforts can the nation navigate the turbulent waters of politics and steer towards a more promising and inclusive future for all its citizens.
