Senate approves Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to Benin Republic
The Senate on Tuesday granted approval for President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional peace-stabilisation effort aimed at safeguarding democratic governance in West Africa.
The approval followed the reading of a formal letter from the President seeking the Senate’s consent to send military personnel to the neighbouring country in order to prevent an unconstitutional change of government and protect democratic institutions.
After receiving the correspondence, the Senate resolved into a Committee of the Whole to consider the request. The motion to move into the closed-door session was adopted through a voice vote, with the majority of lawmakers supporting it.
During the executive session, senators discussed the possible consequences of the deployment, including potential refugee inflows into Nigeria and the security implications for border communities.
Following deliberations, the Senate voted overwhelmingly in favour of authorising the deployment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to Benin Republic.

When the chamber reconvened in plenary, the Senate President confirmed that the committee’s report accurately reflected the discussions held behind closed doors. Senators affirmed this before another voice vote sealed the approval.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended President Tinubu for seeking the legislature’s consent and for taking proactive steps to avert a democratic crisis in the region. He emphasised that the stabilisation mission was vital not only for Benin Republic but also for Nigeria’s national security.
“The President has taken the right step,” he said. “This mission secures our borders, curbs criminal activities, and strengthens democracy in West Africa. A duty to one is a duty to all.”
The Senate’s formal letter of approval is expected to be transmitted to the President without delay.
