KACRAN urges traditional rulers to lead peace efforts in ‘Herders-Farmers’ conflicts
The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has called on Traditional Rulers across the country to take proactive measures in resolving the persistent conflicts between herders and farmers.
In a statement signed by its National President, Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, KACRAN emphasised the critical role of Emirs and Chiefs in fostering dialogue and peace between the two groups. The association noted that before the colonial era, Traditional Rulers had full authority over land management, ensuring harmony through structured land allocation to both herders and farmers.
“Historically, African pastoralists and farmers sought permission from Traditional Rulers before settling or cultivating land, fostering mutual respect. Though modern laws place land ownership under state governments, the traditional land tenure system still recognises the custodianship of our Royal Fathers,” the statement read.
KACRAN commended the efforts of some Traditional Rulers, including the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammad Ibn Abali Ibn Idrisa, for his proactive engagement in preventing disputes through grazing reserve monitoring and enforcement.

Similarly, the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Suleiman, was praised for assisting the Yobe State Government in reclaiming the Jakusko Nasari grazing reserve from encroachment.
The association urged all Emirs and Chiefs to strengthen their roles in conflict resolution, given their respected status in their communities. Additionally, KACRAN called on state governments to provide Traditional Rulers with the necessary administrative and financial support to enhance their mediation efforts.
“Our Traditional Leaders are well-positioned to contribute significantly to national peace and stability. Engaging them fully and equipping them with the needed resources will ensure timely and effective resolutions to herders-farmers conflicts,” KACRAN stated.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and urged all stakeholders to work towards lasting solutions.
