Kano DisCo workers begin strike over poor working conditions
Workers of Kano Distribution Company (Kano DisCo) have commenced an indefinite strike to protest against what they describe as worsening and unacceptable working conditions within the company.
The strike, which began on Monday, was announced by the union representing the workers, citing several grievances including inadequate safety measures, delayed payment of allowances, poor welfare packages, and lack of proper tools and equipment necessary for their duties.
According to union leaders, the workers have endured years of neglect regarding their welfare despite their critical role in power distribution across Kano State. They claim that persistent infrastructural decay, inadequate protective gear, and frequent exposure to hazardous working environments have put their lives at risk.

Additionally, the union raised concerns over the failure of management to address repeated requests for improved working conditions and better remuneration. Workers also lament delays in salary payments and lack of incentives, which have affected their morale and productivity.
The strike has led to disruptions in electricity distribution across several parts of Kano State, with consumers experiencing prolonged power outages.
Union spokesperson, while addressing the media, emphasized that the strike is a last resort after several unsuccessful attempts to engage management in constructive dialogue. They demanded immediate action to resolve the issues, including prompt payment of outstanding dues, improved safety protocols, and provision of necessary tools.
The management of Kano DisCo has yet to release an official statement regarding the strike. Meanwhile, the state government and relevant regulatory authorities have been urged to intervene to ensure a swift resolution that safeguards workers’ rights and restores stable electricity supply.
