Kano Emir Sanusi II enrolls for law degree at North-West University
The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has secured admission into North-West University, Kano, to study Common Law and Sharia, the institution has confirmed.
In an official letter signed by the Head of the Directorate of Examinations, Admissions and Records, Jafaru Sule Muhammad, on behalf of the Registrar, the university disclosed that the monarch was offered direct entry into the LL.B Common Law and Sharia programme at Level 200. The admission will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic session.
The letter, addressed to the Emir at Gidan Rumfa, stated that the offer followed his request for special consideration and a review of his academic credentials, which confirmed that he met the requirements for the programme.

“I am directed to inform Your Highness that the University Management has approved your admission into the LL.B Common Law and Sharia programme after careful consideration of your application and qualifications,” the letter noted.
The admission is subject to full compliance with the university’s rules and regulations, while the Emir was advised to complete his registration with the relevant academic units.
North-West University congratulated the monarch on his admission and wished him success in his academic pursuit.
Emir Sanusi II, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is renowned for his strong academic background and intellectual depth. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1981, and completed his National Youth Service Corps in Yola, Adamawa State, where he served as a teacher.

He later obtained a master’s degree in Economics from ABU in 1983 and lectured at the university for two years. The Emir also pursued advanced Islamic studies at the International University of Africa in Khartoum, Sudan, where he developed expertise in Arabic, Qur’anic studies, Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy and comparative intellectual traditions.
In 2024, Sanusi II earned a PhD in Islamic Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. His doctoral research focused on the codification of Islamic family law as a tool for social reform, with a comparative study of Kano Emirate and the Kingdom of Morocco.
