Kano government demands arrest of former governor Ganduje over proposed security outfit

Kano, Nigeria, The Kano State Government has called on security agencies to arrest former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje over plans to establish a private security outfit, describing the move as a threat to public safety.
The demand followed a meeting of the Kano State Executive Council, which expressed concern over Ganduje’s intention to form a voluntary security force under his foundation. The state government warned that such a move could destabilize security in Kano, especially amid recent incidents of banditry and kidnappings.
“In less than 48 hours of former Governor Ganduje’s announcement of creating a militia-like group, bandits infiltrated a Kano community and abducted several people,” a government source said, emphasizing the recklessness of the plan.

Ganduje had earlier revealed plans to create an outfit akin to the Hisbah, the state’s official moral policing body, reportedly aimed at re-engaging about 12,000 former personnel dismissed from the Hisbah Board. While Ganduje described the initiative as voluntary and intended for community service, Kano authorities argue that it amounts to setting up a parallel security structure outside constitutional authority.
The Executive Council’s statement urged relevant security agencies to investigate Ganduje’s actions and take appropriate legal steps. Observers note that this development may heighten political tension in the state, given ongoing rivalries between the former and current administrations.
Ganduje and several associates are also facing separate legal proceedings on alleged bribery and misappropriation of public funds.
