Kano Governor allocates 31% of N549bn 2025 budget to education

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has presented a landmark N549.16 billion budget for 2025, with a strong focus on education, health, and infrastructure.

The budget, which has been dubbed the “Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development,” is structured with a clear prioritisation of growth and development, directing 57% of the funds (N312.63 billion) to capital projects and 43% (N236.53 billion) to recurrent expenditure.

In an unprecedented move, the education sector is receiving the highest allocation—N168.35 billion, which represents 31% of the total budget.

This marks a historic commitment by the state government, ensuring that education takes precedence over other sectors. Health is also a major priority, receiving 16.5% of the total budget (N90.6 billion), while infrastructure development is allocated N70.68 billion (12.87%).

The governor highlighted that the strategic focus for 2025 would be on human capital development and infrastructural growth. Speaking on the importance of education in transforming the state, Governor Yusuf reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education, despite the financial challenges.

He revealed plans to revive the Kano Education Development Support (KEDS) agency, which will focus on securing additional funding for educational initiatives.

The governor expressed confidence that the Kano State House of Assembly would pass the necessary legislation to back this initiative.

Governor Yusuf also outlined proposed legislative reforms, including bills aimed at improving social protection, education trust, security, and the civil service.

These reforms, he believes, will reinforce governance structures and foster long-term growth in the state. His administration is focused on addressing pressing social issues while ensuring the state’s economic prosperity.

“Our goal for 2025 is to alleviate poverty, restore hope, create wealth, generate employment, and stimulate agriculture, all for the overall well-being of our people,” Yusuf said in his address. He urged the state assembly to approve the budget swiftly to ensure that the outlined projects and reforms can be implemented on schedule.

In response, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, expressed the legislature’s full commitment to expediting the budget’s review and passage.

“We understand the importance of timely implementation for the benefit of our people, and we will work diligently to ensure the budget is reviewed and passed promptly,” he said.

The Kano State Assembly is set to begin deliberations on the budget in the coming weeks, with hopes that the swift approval will allow for the early commencement of the planned projects.
