Kano Governor donates ₦100m to market fire victims

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced a donation of ₦100 million to victims of the recent fire that devastated the Kantin Kwari Textile Market.
The announcement came during his visit to the market, where he expressed solidarity with the affected traders.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the fund is intended to alleviate the impact of the tragedy, stating, “While this money cannot fully compensate for the losses suffered, it is intended to help ease the burden on those affected.”
In addition to the financial support, the governor outlined several initiatives aimed at improving the market’s infrastructure and preventing future disasters.
These include the installation of solar-powered street lights, rehabilitation of the road network, construction of drainage systems, and the provision of motorized boreholes to enhance conditions at the market.

The fire incident destroyed 29 shops but was quickly contained, thanks to the swift response of firefighters. Alhaji Hamisu Sa’ad Dogon Nama, Managing Director of the Kantin Kwari Market Management Board, expressed gratitude for the rescue efforts, highlighting the timely intervention that prevented the fire from spreading further.
Chairman of the Market Elders Committee, Alhaji Sabu’u Bako, also commended the governor for his support and urged the state government to address other operational challenges faced by traders in the market.
He stated, “We thank His Excellency for his concern, and we hope the government can help us resolve some of the ongoing issues at the market.”
Governor Yusuf reassured traders of the state’s commitment to strengthening Kano’s position as a commercial hub in Northern Nigeria and beyond, affirming, “We are determined to keep Kano thriving as a center of commerce not just for Nigeria, but for West Africa.”
The governor’s visit and financial aid have been widely appreciated by traders and community leaders, who see it as a significant step toward rebuilding and enhancing the market’s resilience against future challenges.
