Kidnappers demand ₦50m ransom for Kogi varsity students

The kidnappers of two students from Kogi State University, Kabba (KSUK), have demanded a ransom of ₦50 million for their release. The students were abducted last week Friday from the same location and on the same day as the Caretaker Chairman of Kabba/Bunu Council, Dare Micheal, and his three aides.

While Dare Micheal was released shortly after due to his deteriorating health, which made it difficult for him to keep up with the abductors, the other three aides and the two students remain in captivity.

Initially, the kidnappers demanded ₦100 million for the release of the chairman’s aides. However, they have now set a separate ransom of ₦50 million for the students.

Shadrach Babalola, the father of one of the kidnapped students, Isaac Babalola, shared that his son and his friend, Joel Bamiyo, both from the Public Administration Department, have been held by the kidnappers for a week. He expressed his frustration, stating that every time they negotiate with the abductors, they are told they are not serious about the safety of their children if they cannot meet the demands.

Babalola pleaded with the state government to intervene, stressing the ongoing fear and anxiety the families are experiencing.

In contrast, the Kogi State Police Command claimed they were not aware that students were among those abducted. SP William Aya, the State Police Public Relations Officer, expressed surprise that the students’ parents had not formally reported the abduction to the authorities.

Similarly, the university has remained silent on the matter, with the Institution’s Public Relations Officer, Tade Oshaloto, refusing to comment on the situation when approached.
