Kwara Governor suspends polytechnic rector, sets up panel to probe student protest

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has ordered the suspension of the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, following a student protest at the institution in Ilorin on Tuesday.

The governor also constituted a three-member investigative panel to examine the causes of the protest and how it was handled. The panel, announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, is chaired by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Ibrahim Sulyman.

Other members include the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary of Service Welfare, Dr. Mercy Olufunke Shittu.

The committee is tasked with investigating both the remote and immediate causes of the protest, evaluating the response, recommending measures to prevent future occurrences, and suggesting ways to promote the institution’s growth. They have been given two weeks to submit their report to the governor.

Meanwhile, the governor directed that the most senior deputy rector take over as acting rector during the suspension period until further notice.
